Sheila began her career as a mechanical engineer. Two of her most innovative designs, a paper stacker and an ATM cash gate were inspired by a crumpled newspaper and a roll of toilet paper. Her work in hardware design with the “incident” informed her passion for requirements. Ms. Thorne’s expertise, as a business architect, is her ability to take clients from vision to reality. Her portfolio includes business strategy development, requirements definition, learning & development and organizational change. In her 40 year career with IBM, she ensured solutions successfully integrated people, process and technology to deliver client value.
She currently consults with companies on technical leadership development and coaches technical people to communicate to a business audience. She is on the board of Trustees for Neumont College of Computer Science, a member of the National Speaker Association, a senior member of IEEE, and is an Open Group Distinguished Certified IT Specialist. She is in her tenth year of weekly blogging at Balancing on Unstable Surfaces. Sheila has a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Finally, she is a yoga instructor and a fledging cello player.
